Graduation Day today for everyone taking the easy 5 day Stereogram Bootcamp. Hooray!

So, now you can put what you know into practice. This is the day I’ve added the 3D part to the stereograms. Use the techniques from the previous lessons and apply it here. For those who have never been able to see a stereogram, this might be the day you do it.

I’ll give you two of the same image….the first one is for the cross eye method, and the second image is for the stare through (parallel) method.

Congrats on reaching the final step. After you merge the images together, you’ll be able to see all my 3D stereogram illustrations. They are all based on the same technique where you merge or fuse the side by side images together.

This image has a little bit of everything…detail areas where your eyes can jump around to and of course 3D, where now your eyes will be able to focus on
different depths within the image too. You’ll be able to practice focusing on the flower in the front of everything and then switching focus to the dots behind everything.

Let me know how it worked for you through Facebook, Twitter, email or comments. I’d love to hear your stories. Once you get this working for you, try some of my other 3D stereograms. There’s a handy “Top Stereogram Links” on the top left of the blog.
Have a good look around…and through the images.

Hope you enjoyed the series and I hope I’ve opened up a new dimension for you.
Click the images to make them bigger.

Stereogram Bootcamp, Day 4.

Excellent, only one day left. It makes me so happy to hear that this has been working, so keep sending the messages. (This blog is picked up directly into Facebook, so don’t forget to go to Scullery Press on Facebook and get signed up. Let the blog find you!

Now for the lesson for today. Easy day four!

This image uses both techniques….The cross eye way and the stare through way. (Both covered in the previous lessons in case you’re playing catch up)

All the same rules apply. Either cross your eyes until the two rows merge or fuse together, OR stare through (zone out or look at your reflection in your screen to look past the image)

Again, this image has no 3D illusion in it, we’re just practicing and getting used to joining the images together and training your eyes to look around while keeping focus.

Once the image merges and you can focus on it, try looking at each part separately. There’s a little more detail, more points to look at and a touch of the background coming through each petal….. it gives something more for the eye to latch onto when trying to get it in focus.

If the image is a little out of focus, your eyes will adjust to it and usually will get the focus in a very short period of time. Amazingly, and a surprise to me when I first started showing my work, some people who wore glasses found it worked much better when they removed their normal glasses and tried it with the naked eye.

Everyone has a different experience, which adds to the fun. When I started doing this, I could easily do the stare through technique, but the cross eye method always was fuzzy at first, and then slowly the image focused. Now it clicks into place fully focused. I wish I had my eyes tested before I started doing this. I’m finding that I barely use my glasses now, where I used to use them all the time.

That’s it for this lesson! One more to go. Click the image to make it bigger.
See you tomorrow for the last day

Welcome to Stereogram Bootcamp, day 3 (of 5).

Great, so, from the previous day, we now know that there are two ways of looking at a stereogram…Cross-eyed viewing and Staring Through. Both these ways of looking at the images are called “Free Viewing” or “Free Fusion”, the latter being the more correct one because you are literally joining the images together freely.

On we go to today’s lesson. This image again has no 3D illusion in it, and again we’re just practicing and getting used to joining the images together. This image has a little more going on in it, and gives the eyes a little more to look at.

You can view this image by using both the cross eyed method or the stare through method. The stare through method is also called Parallel Viewing.

As before, try using both techniques. You may prefer one method over the other.

1. Cross eye viewing…

This image has more items …… and it also has a variety to their placement. Again, cross your eyes a little bit…. just until the two rows merge together in the middle.

Once they merge on top of each other, try to hold your focus and look at each part of the middle row. (When you have your eyes crossed, you will see three rows for this image. If you see four rows…you’ve crossed your eyes too much)

2. Stare through the image…

For this technique, your focus point is behind your screen.

A good way to get used to this is to look at your reflection in the screen while you have the image up in front of you. When you do that, your focus is behind the image.

As with the cross eyed viewing, once both images merge on top of each other, try to hold your focus and look at each part of the middle row. (You should see three rows once everything is lined up. If you see four rows, you have focused to far behind the image.)

There is a little bit more to look at in this image, and you’ll be able to practice looking at each section to get your eyes used to looking around without loosing focus on the middle, merged image.

As always, click the image to make it bigger. Only two days left to go we finish the exercises!
Can’t wait to hear how you do.

Welcome to Stereogram Bootcamp, day 2 (of 5).

Hope the first eye exercise went well. Now onto the next part.

Image is below. Click on it to make it bigger after you read the easy instructions.

There are two ways to look at a stereogram… by crossing your eyes or to stare through the image. Some favour one technique over the other…and that’s why I create images for both ways of viewing. I will always let you know which way the image is set up for.

1. Cross eye viewing…

This next image has more items to look at.

There is no 3D in this image….I just want you to get these shapes to join on top of each other and get used to looking at a different parts of the image.

2. Stare through the image…

The second way, and also just as good an exercise, is to stare through the image to give the same effect.

This time, you need to have your focus point behind your screen.

Again, there is no 3D in this image….I just want you to get these shapes to join on top of each other and get used to looking at a different parts of the image.

That’s all for today. Small steps. Remember the goal is to be able to see the 3D stereograms by the fifth day.

For those that have never been able to see stereograms…It’s Stereogram Bootcamp Week!

I know there are a lot of people who have never been able to see any stereograms, so this week I have 5 easy steps, one each day, so you can overcome this.

By Friday, you should be able to see my work float off the screen.

Bootcamp Day 1.

(As always, click the image to make it bigger)

For this image, all you need to do is cross your eyes a little bit…. just until the two circles merge together in the middle.

Just cross your eyes enough to see three circles. If you see four, you’ve crossed your eyes too much.

That’s all there is to the training for today! Practice for a short time only. If your eyes get tired, give them a rest and try again later. Gradually, your eyes will get stronger and you’ll be able to see the merged image for as long as you want to.

There is no 3D in this image….I just want you to get these shapes to join on top of each other.

When you see three of the same circle shape. Just try to concentrate on the middle one and get that one into focus.

Maybe It’s In The Blood!

So this took me completely by surprise. It turns out that a technique I use is thought to have been used by the monks that wrote The Book of Kells! It’s all to do with the way I look at the image, and there is a natural magnification that occurs that they believe the monks used when drawing the incredible detail in The Book of Kells.

Tomm Moore, the director of The Secret of Kells, the Irish film that received an Academy Award Nomination for this year’s Best Animation Oscar, pulled me aside and said, “Hey, did your hear that a professor uncovered that the monks may have used your technique for The Book of Kells?” Amazing!

Part of the plot of “The Secret of Kells” involves a crystal that the monks used as a magnifying glass to get all the detail in there. No one was really sure how the did it…until now. So, maybe being Irish, and growing up there, has something to do with coming up with the 3D Stereogram art.

Here’s the article…..
Researcher uncovers secrets of Kells ‘angels’
